THE ACORN THEATER ANNOUNCES NEW CLASS SCHEDULE

FOR FALL 2008


CLASSES INCLUDE INSTRUCTION ON SCREENWRITING, VOICEOVERS, DRUMMING, STORYTELLING, LOCAL FOODS, AND MORE


THREE OAKS, MI (September 21, 2008)—The Acorn Theater announces the new class schedule for the Fall 2008 Season. Expanding on the previous class offerings, this season will include both full classes in ranging sessions AND one session “Afternoons at The Acorn” classes. This season’s roster includes teachers from all over the Harbor Country area, sharing their expertise in fields ranging from the entertainment world to the culinary industry. The Acorn is also improving on their classes by allowing prospective students to register on-line via the website, www.acorntheater.com.


AFTERNOONS AT THE ACORN:

Understanding the constraints of both time and economics, this fall The Acorn will offer classes that take place in one session, on a single afternoon. These afternoon sessions will take place at The Acorn from 1-4pm.


EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT MAKING A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE…

Saturday, October 18

1:00-4:00pm EDT

This afternoon session will ultimately deliver everything you ever wanted to know about making a Hollywood movie…in three hours. Students will actually write, cast, and fake shoot the last scene of a movie and discuss everything that takes place during the process. Steven will explain studios, agencies, the various jobs on movies, etc.


Steve Zacharias drove out to Hollywood in 1970, wrote 3 spec situation comedy scripts and was signed by Garry Marshall, the Executive Producer of many TV shows, to be his manager...For the next 12 years, Steve wrote situation comedies, including story editing on 'The Partridge Family', multiple episodes of 'Happy Days', 'Love American Style', and 2 stories on 'All in the Family', one of which, 'Edith Going Through Menapause', won an 'Emmy'...After 12 years in television, often working with 'Brandon Tartikoff', the President of NBC, Steve co-wrote 'Revenge of the Nerds'...This launched Steve into the movie business where he has written 8 movies, including 'Johnny B. Good', starring Anthony Michael Hall, 'Eddie', starring 'Whoopi Goldberg', and 'In the Army Now', starring 'Pauli Shore'...He has literally worked for every major network and film studio and now resides in Chicago.


SAVORING HARVEST ~ From Market to Table

As fall approaches, so does the eager anticipation of bountiful, locally grown foods in Harbor Country. Crisp air and autumn colors provide a gorgeous backdrop for this event, allowing the perfect opportunity to learn how to cook something savory and comforting, using local ingredients. The class will assemble at The Acorn, and then caravan to Dingus Farms (just outside of Three Oaks.) Dingus Farms is a fantastic fall experience—pumpkins and squashes galore, and is the perfect place for Halloween and fall family fun! The class will “shop the market”, with Patty instructing on growing and selecting local produce. (Students are encouraged to bring market bags for shopping.) After the farm, the class will assemble back at the theater, where Patty will show how to prepare Beef Cognac Stew in a Baked Pumpkin Shell, from “A Need To Feed Cookbook”. The class will include lunching on the delectable stew they have just prepared.

FAMILY RHYTHM DRUMMING CIRCLE—RHYTHMWORKS

Rhythm is something that all humans have in common and is an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. The family rhythm circle focuses on sharpening listening skills to create a community of rhythm-makers. Participants will use a variety of percussion instruments to create a rhythm orchestra. Families will learn how to recreate the rhythm circle in their own homes.


All percussion instruments are welcome, and participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they have them. A limited number of drums and other percussion instruments will be available for use.



Lead Instructor: Vincenzo (Vinny) Carrasco

Vinny has been a professional kit drummer since 1993. He has played a wide array of musical genre including rock, punk, funk, jam, blues, and traditional West-African music. He has been performing West-African drumming since 1998, and has since added other global percussion to his skill set. He is also the drummer for “Blue Star Highway” and “Night Moves,” a Bob Seger Tribute Band. Vinny plays djembe, dun duns, doumbek, congas and any percussion instrument you place in front of him. He has studied under YaYa Kabo, Boynarr Sow, Yakoub Kouyate, Ryan Edwards and Michael Markus.


Vinny is RhythmWorks! lead percussion teacher and facilitator, specializing in helping both children and adults get in touch with their sense of rhythm; and creating cohesive musical groups from individual percussion participants. He is also the front man for the RhythmWorks! performance ensemble and is responsible for arranging most of the group’s music. Vinny is an Alumni of the University of Notre Dame.


Assistant Instructor: Judith Hizer

Judith fell in love with West-African music in 1994 when she attended a performance by "Prince Julius and the Drums of West-Africa." Her first opportunity to play was in 2000, when she joined a women's drum circle. Judith began learning West-African rhythms in 2001. Judith plays djembe, bodhran, dun duns, and doumbek. She enjoys playing with sound, and has just as much fun playing a pair of kitchen spoons as she does playing a drum. She has studied under Helen Bond, YaYa Kabo and Michael Markus. Her musical interests include Celtic, folk, Middle Eastern and global fusion. She has composed some of the RhythmWorks! ensemble’s vocal pieces, blending her love of prose and poetry with percussion.


Judith enjoys helping women find their voice and their confidence through percussion and specializes in teaching drumming for women’s groups. She is an Alumna of Indiana University Kokomo.

STORIES ON STAGE

The Acorn is thrilled to bring Donna Blue Lachman back to teach her highly acclaimed class Stories on Stage. Donna believes that everyone has stories inside of them, and she helps create and teach the process of bringing those stories out of the person and onto the stage. This is a fantastic class to celebrate the live performance in everyone.

In addition to his one-day session, Steven Zacharias will teach a four-session class to further dive into everything one needs to know in order to write a screenplay. During this class, students will learn the idea and the complete superstructure of a movie, and will be taught to understand the first 12 pages of a screenplay, and how they explain the who, where, why, and when. The class will further discuss the “problem beginning”, and explain how to move flawlessly through the screenplay writing process.


ADULT BEGINNER HAND PERCUSSION WITH RYTHMWORKS

The adult beginners drum class will focus on the basic skills and techniques of rhythm-making. Students will develop their individual sense of rhythm; learn the techniques of percussion to explore and develop their drum’s “voice;” and learn how to use space and create layers of rhythm.


All hand drums are welcome, and participants are encouraged to bring their own drum if they have one. A limited number of drums and will be available for use.



HEARD YOU ON THE RADIO MASTERCLASS

Kim Clark and Katherine Hart will teach students the art of recorded speaking to aid in their radio shows, podcasts, etc. The dynamic duo will also teach interview skills, and explain the subtle art of reading copy and provide a thorough understanding of using vocal imaging to obtain success!


Katherine Hart has studied with masters, including Ute Hagen, Lloyd Richards, and Jean-Louis Barruealt (Marcel Marcsoues mime teacher). She has worked with the following compaines, cafe la Mama In New York and Joseph Papp’s Theatre, as well as doing a one-woman show at the St. Clements Theatre. Katherine has taught as a guest artist at Harvard, Yale, Brandies, Vassar, Bates, Brown, Trinity College, Loyola, DePaul, Drake, Temple, and NYU. She has worked, performed, and taught with some of Chicago’s most impressive theater companies, namely Steppenwolf, Goodman, Victory Gardens, Organic, and Body Politic. She has also worked at MOMING Dance and Arts center. Katherine started and or founded Imaginist Theatre Company of New York and Philadelphia, and Actors Academy of Chicago.


Kim Clark is a writer and producer of television and film.   In 2006 he ran for elected office as the Democratic candidate for United States Congress from the 6th district of Michigan.  Prior to that, he served for several years as National Head of the Writing Programs at Chicago's famous Second City in the Second City Training Centers. His students currently write for many television series such as Saturday Night Live, Conan O'Brien, and The Daily Show. Kim has served as Artistic Director at the Chicago Center for Performing Arts.  Clark teaches Screenwriting at Chicago's DePaul University and serves as the Acorn Theater's Artistic Director.
